Literature Review #4
1.Visual:
This is the book, Family Values: Between Neoliberalism and the New Social Conservatism, written by Melinda Cooper
2. Citation:
Cooper, Melinda. “In Loco Parentis.” Family Values: between Neoliberalism and the New Social Conservatism, by Melinda Cooper, Zone Books, 2019.
3. Summary:
In the specific article, In Loco Parentis, Cooper explains the importance of "human capital" and why education should be viewed as an important investment that is needed to be mad by our society. Cooper also explains the stresses of student debt on families and how it specifically affects them.
4. Author:
The author of this book is Melinda Cooper. Cooper graduated from the University of Paris in 2001, and is now a professor in the school of Social and Political Science at the University of Sydney, Australia. By studying and teaching Social Sciences, Cooper is educated and has enough knowledge to write a book about student debt.
5. Key Terms:
- "human capital": the skills, knowledge, and experience possessed by an individual or population, viewed in terms of their value or cost to an organization or country,
- "Neoliberalism": a political approach that favors free-market capitalism, deregulation, and reduction in government spending
6. Three Quotes:
- “spending on human services such as an education should be considered an investment rather than an act of consumption” (Cooper 219)
- "human capital investment, then, was the missing production factor in growth economics" (Cooper 220)
- "the total outstanding balance on student debt almost tripled between 2004 and 2012, climbing from $364 billion too $966 billion in less than a decade" (Cooper 216)
7. Value:
This source helps me explore my research question by answering the question of why a lowered-cost educated is necessary. By explaining human capital, Cooper proves how much more beneficial a society would be with a more educated population. I can use that in my project as a reason why the tuition costs for an education should be lowered, since it would be helping the overall population.
